A. Overview
Germans often appear stiff and overly formal to Americans while Americans can seem boastful and superficial to Germans. In fact, we are all conditioned by the culture we grew up in, which based on unstated rules, directs the way we perceive things as well as how we prefer to work or communicate with others. Whether you do business in Germany, plan to visit the country on vacation, or seek to better understand your German heritage, this practical workshop will help expand your horizons and develop the skills necessary to work and communicate more effectively with Germans in the future.
B. Objectives
Participants will:
- Learn what it means to be "culturally competent"
- Understand how our mindset, values, assumptions, communication style and behavior are directly conditioned by the culture we grew up in
- Gain insight into the German cultural system
- Understand how culture impacts upon business practices and relationships
- Appreciate how and why people in Germany prefer to work and communicate the way they do
- Foster mutual understanding and respect
- Develop skills necessary to thrive both professionally and personally in the target culture
- Develop strategies and a personal action plan to work and communicate more effectively with people from Germany
